The degree will give students the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become a successful primary teacher, with a primary teaching specialisation as mandated by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), in Literacy in the Inclusive Classroom. Students are encouraged to be independent learners who are able to adapt efficiently and constructively to meet the changes which occur in the teaching profession. Teacher Registration: Students should note that teacher registration requirements vary from state to state. UNE bases its degree structures on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) guidelines, under the AITSL framework for teacher registration. It is the responsibility of each student to check their eligibility to teach with the relevant state authority (including students who intend to teach in NSW). This course is accredited with the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA). IMPORTANT ADVICE The course is structured to provide in the first year eight discipline units across the Primary Key Learning Areas, to ensure a spread of content background; successful completion of this first year also gives all students, irrespective of their educational backgrounds, the opportunity to demonstrate they meet the Government's academic standards for studying teaching. In addition to the above, from 2018 initial teacher education students must satisfy the School of their suitability for teaching through the satisfactory completion of a non-academic capability assessment. Career Opportunities The Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary) prepares teachers to work in an inclusive setting (local primary school) or a special class (within a local primary school or within a special school).

  • UNE Origins
    The vision of those who fought to establish Australia’s first regional university at Armidale in northern NSW is still alive at the University of New England.The story begins with the election, in 1920, of David Henry Drummond as representative of the Northern Tablelands in the NSW Legislative Assembly. Drummond was a foundation member of the New State Movement, which believed in the potential of New England to become Australia’s seventh State – with, necessarily, its own educational institutions. His interest in education led to his appointment, in 1927, as Minister for Education in a newly-elected NSW Government.

    The University of New England is a body corporate established by the University of New England Act, 1993 (NSW), (UNE Act). The University of New England comprises the UNE Council, Convocation, the University’s graduates and its students. The functions of its governing bodies (UNE Council and Academic Board) are outlined within the UNE Act and its associated University of New England By-law (2005) .The Vice-Chancellor is appointed by Council as the University’s Chief Executive Officer and is also the University’s principal academic officer. The Vice-Chancellor is supported and assisted by a team of senior executives, who provide strategic, policy and operational advice relating to their individual portfolios.
