RMIT University
Overview
This honours program provides you with foundation research skills to underpin your future career as a researcher or practitioner in the mathematical sciences.
Specifically, honours students develop:
communication skills
critical thinking capability
experience in analysis and problem solving
knowledge of research theory and methods
research independence and capacity for self-directed learning
Research experience gained as part of an honours program is required for most academic and research positions, and increasingly for positions in other sectors of industry.
In consultation with the program coordinator and your potential supervisor, you will be allocated a project that aims to complement your skills and areas of interest.
As an intending RMIT mathematical sciences honours student, you are eligible to attend the AMSI Summer School of Mathematics, and apply for financial support to do so.
Additionally, you may also apply for the AMSI Vacation Research Scholarships for intending honours students where you will have the opportunity to work on a six to 12-week research project and receive support to attend the AMSIConnect conference.
Honours projects
The projects are developed specifically for honours students and may be a preliminary exploration, a smaller component of a bigger research project or part of an existing collaboration with industry.
Discipline areas include:
algebraic coding theory
complex networks and epidemiology
computational fluid dynamics
dynamics and control theory and applications
environmental and resource modelling
general mathematical modelling
graph and complexity theory
information security
integer programming and discrete mathematics
mathematical biology
networks and graph theory
numerical analysis
optimisation theory – algorithms and applications
data mining, machine learning
