About Charles Darwin University

Charles Darwin University (CDU) is an Australian public university with about 22,083 students as of 2011. It was established in 2003[3] after the merger of Northern Territory University (NTU) of Darwin with the Menzies School of Health Research and Centralian College of Alice Springs, and it was named after Charles Darwin, the celebrated English naturalist.

It is a member of the group of seven Innovative Research Universities in Australia.[4] CDU has campuses in the Darwin suburb of Casuarina, the city of Palmerston, and the towns of Alice Springs, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, with smaller training centres in Jabiru, Tennant Creek and Yulara. A new waterfront campus opened in 2015 in the Darwin CBD which contains the business school.

  • University Profile
Charles Darwin University is unique. No other single Australian university serves such a large area of the continent, in such a remote location and with such a small population to sustain it. While the Northern Territory covers around 16 percent of Australia, in 2015 it was home to just over 1 percent of the population, 30 percent of whom were Indigenous compared with around 3 percent of the general Australian population. The only university based in the Northern Territory, CDU is a dual sector university. We are the most northerly Australian university, literally on Asia’s doorstep. Closer in many respects to the vast populations of Asia than to the southern Australian states.Ours is a university deeply engaged with, and informed by, Australia’s Indigenous people. Recognising that we operate on the lands of many strong Indigenous nations, respecting the knowledge and culture of Aboriginal people and committed to Indigenous advancement. These are truly unique features that CDU embraces as both challenges and opportunities for the years ahead, building on the strong foundations and remarkable achievements of our 25-year history. In this relatively short space of time, we have developed a reputation as one of the most innovative teaching and learning and most research-intensive universities in Australia and have risen to the ranks of the top 2 percent of world universities in 2015.CDU has provided and will continue to provide, the human capital that underpins the future prosperity of Northern Australia and our near Asian region, while also providing innovative and flexible online learning choices for a broader national student market.
  • Structure and Leadership
Charles Darwin University is a multi-sector university which provides training and education to more than 21,000 students across its eight campuses and centres in the Northern Territory and Australia.
  • Charles Darwin Scholar
The Charles Darwin Scholar Program is a biennial initiative established in 2013 to enhance Charles Darwin University’s links to the work and legacy of its namesake, Charles Darwin.Darwin was arguably one of the most influential scientists the world has known. The Program brings eminent scholars of Darwin, or of the legacy of his work such as evolutionary biology, to CDU to engage in discussion, intellectual enquiry and activities to expand local knowledge and stimulate thinking. Charles Darwin Scholars are invited to deliver an Oration on their work – the Charles Darwin Oration.
  • Learning and Teaching
The University promotes and supports the development of educational practices that provide high-quality and diverse learning experiences for all students.
